Will it soon be time to bid farewell to ‘The Playboy Club?’ Yes, if the members of The Parents Television Council (PTC) have their way.
The PTC has been campaigning against NBC’s new drama series for months, urging advertisers and NBC affiliates to drop it.
Now the PTC claims that seven advertisers have already withdrawn from ‘The Playboy Club’ and is calling for the series — which the pressure group says “objectifies and degrades women” — to be cancelled immediately.
Asking members to put pressure on the remaining sponsors of the show (Capital One, Samsung and Chrysler), PTC President Tim Winters said the group wants to know “if their corporate values are in step with those of the Playboy brand.”
Winters added that, “What has been clear to everyone outside of NBC must now be clear even to those inside NBC: ‘The Playboy Club’ is a commercial disaster and must be removed from the airwaves. We call for the network to cancel this degrading and sexualizing program immediately.”
‘The Playboy Club’ attracted a lot of early buzz, but launched to disappointing ratings and saw its audience drop by a whopping 19 percent for the second episode. It was already widely considered to be one of the front-runners for early cancellation this fall, even without extra pressure from the PTC.
It’s entirely possible that advertisers are pulling the plug on the show purely because of the low ratings rather than the PTC’s advocacy.
Winters may simply be echoing sentiments shared by the suits at NBC when he said “any further airing of the show … is a profoundly bad business decision.”
